Lead Dermatologist & Surgeon
Joseph J. Schwartz, MD
Growing up in Queens and Long Island — then studying in Brooklyn and Boston — Dr. Schwartz would not have predicted he would establish a career and private practice in Upstate New York.
Following the advice of his late father-in-law and Troy-based orthodontist Dr. Marvin Kessler, Dr. Schwartz opened his Troy office is the summer of 1995.
Now, almost 30 years later, he is proud to say he has provided care to tens of thousands of patients from Troy and the surrounding area and now some of their children as well!
After graduating from the University of Michigan, Dr. Schwartz studied Medicine at SUNY Stony Brook. His post-graduate studies are extensive, completing an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Dermatology at SUNY Brooklyn and Boston University, as well as completing a fellowship in skin cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in Manhattan.
Dr. Schwartz is grateful for the support of the local community of physicians, his devoted office staff, and his accomplished coworkers, Dr. Robert G Shoss, Nurse Practitioner Karen Royston, and Physician Assistants Maura Corbett, Katie Lampert, and Megan Mooney.
Dermatologist & Cosmetic Services
Robert G. Shoss, MD
Dr. Shoss is a board-certified dermatologist, Vice President of the New York State Dermatology Society, and member of the American Academy of Dermatology Advisory Committee. He has been providing dermatological care in the Capital Region for nearly 48 years, including skin cancer screening, surgical and medical treatments, and aesthetic services such as laser treatments and facial rejuvenation with Botox and dermal fillers. During this time, he is proud to have had the privilege of serving generations of families.
Dr. Shoss completed his internal medicine internship and residency at the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio before completing his dermatology training at Albany Medical Center.
Dr. Shoss belongs to numerous local, regional and national dermatology societies and remains involved in teaching medical students, residents, and physician assistant trainees via his association with Albany Medical College as an Associate Clinical Professor. He is actively involved in promoting sun safety through various initiatives, including his work with Impact Melanoma, to install sunscreen dispensing stations in the Capital District and regularly screens local firefighters and EMTs for skin cancer.
Nurse Practitioner
Karen Royston, NP
Karen is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a graduate of the Albany Medical College Nurse Practitioner Program.
Initially after graduating, she ran a federally funded rural health clinic and provided family healthcare. After relocating to Latham, she worked in Internal Medicine at CHP until 1990 when she began her specialization in dermatology. She joined Dr Schwartz in his dermatology practice in 2000.
Karen has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of both common and complex dermatological conditions, as well as providing preventative skin health care.
When not at work, she enjoys walks in the woods, golf, gardening, and time with her grandchild.
Physician's Assistant
Katherine Lampert, PA
Katherine is a Board Certified Physician Assistant and has been practicing since 2016. She attended Albany Medical College where she received her Masters in Physician Assistant studies.Prior to that, Katherine attended Union College where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Neuroscience. After graduating from Albany Medical College, she completed a Fellowship in Emergency Medicine and Trauma at Albany Medical Center. She then worked in the Emergency Department for many years prior to entering into the field of Dermatology.Katherine is passionate about the field of dermatology and treating patients with skin conditions. She is skilled in performing skin exams to evaluate for and treat skin cancers, as well as many other dermatologic conditions. She is proficient in performing biopsies, injections, cryotherapy, and other procedures.Katherine is excited to be practicing with Dr. Schwartz Dermatology in Troy. She is originally from the Lake George area, and enjoys skiing, hiking, biking, boating and spending time outdoors.
Physician's Assistant
Maura Corbett, PA
Maura is a nationally Board Certified Physician Assistant. A member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, New York Society of Physician Assistants, and the Society for Dermatology Physician Assistants, Maura is passionate about both the field of dermatology and being a PA.
After graduating Quinnipiac University PA Program with honors, she returned to the Capital Region and began working at Albany Medical Center in Emergency Medicine. While working there, she gained hands-on experience in quick, critical thinking, and advanced procedures. After four years working in the only regional Level I trauma center for both pediatric and adult patients, she decided to hone her skills in dermatology, focusing on providing high-quality care to patients with all conditions of the skin.
After training directly under Dr. Schwartz, Maura is able to diagnosis and treat all disorders of the skin including but not limited to skin cancers, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne, rosacea and various other conditions in patients ages 0-100. She has a particular interest in treating adolescent patients with acne. She is competent in performing numerous procedures performed in daily dermatologic care such as intralesional injections, biopsies, and administration of cryosurgery. Maura prides herself on her attention to detail and compassionate, individualized care. She is excited to be practicing in Dr. Schwartz’s office.
When not in the office, Maura sits on the Board for her alma mater, St. Thomas the Apostle School in Delmar. She enjoys singing, playing piano, reading, spending time outdoors, and spending time with her husband, son, and golden retriever.
Physician's Assistant
Megan Mooney, PA
Megan is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and licensed by the State of New York. She attended Albany Medical College for Physician Assistant Studies where she graduated with honors. For her undergraduate degree, she attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She is a member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants, and New York Society of Physician Assistants. She is also a member of the Pi Alpha Honor Society.
Megan has been a practicing PA since 2017. Prior to entering the field of Dermatology, Megan worked in Cardiology for several years where she covered General Cardiology as well as sub-specializing in Structural Heart disease. She also has experience in Emergency Medicine.
Megan loves Dermatology and treating diseases of the skin. After training directly with Dr. Schwartz, she is proficient in the evaluation and treatment of both common and rare skin conditions. She is skilled at performing procedures including cryotherapy, biopsies, and removal of benign and cancerous skin lesions. Megan enjoys working with patients of all ages to address their concerns. She has a special interest in treating acne, knowing that skin conditions can also affect a patient’s self-esteem. She is excited to join Dr. Schwartz’s excellent team.
Originally from the Northern Catskills, Megan has always been local to the Capital District. When not at work, she enjoys traveling, baking, gardening, hiking, doing agility with her dog, and spending time with her husband and daughters.
